There is a macro "NO_AUTODETECT" that's used in that code. Maybe it's
defined?

Anyway, the code assumes that the parameter for sanei_usb_open is a
filedescriptor and uses open instead of sanei_usb_open. That's not
possible anymore in recent SANE versions. I'm pretty much surprised
that it works at all.

That external backend needs a maintainer to avoid bit-rot.
