The coolscan backend hasn't been changed since 1.0.3 and I don't
remeber similar reports. If that's really a backend bug it has been
there forever.

The backend is unmaintained, at least there haven't been any updates
during the last years. Contacting the author Andreas Rick
<andreas.rick at free.fr> may be worth a try if it's really a backend
problem.

Checking for the usual SCSI problems should be done first.
