I didn't know to look in /var/log/messages. I went and found the logs from
approximately when I was working on this last night. Below are cuts of
everything I think might be relavent (with some stuff I don't think is but
might be related so I left it in there). Are these the messages you might
have been expecting?

Possibly pertainent messages found in /var/log/messages:

>From Boot-up:
Feb 25 19:41:01 Maria kernel: aec671x_detect:
Feb 25 19:41:01 Maria kernel: PCI: Found IRQ 11 for device 00:0c.0
Feb 25 19:41:01 Maria kernel: ACARD AEC-671X PCI Ultra/W SCSI-3 Host
Adapter: 0 IO:b000, IRQ:11.
Feb 25 19:41:01 Maria kernel: ID: 5 UMAX Astra 2400S V1.1
Feb 25 19:41:01 Maria kernel: ID: 7 Host Adapter

Feb 25 19:41:01 Maria kernel: Vendor: UMAX Model: Astra 2400S
Rev:

I'm not sure what all these are about:
Feb 25 19:42:05 Maria pam_timestamp_check: pam_timestamp: `/' owner GID != 0
Feb 25 19:42:40 Maria last message repeated 7 times
Feb 25 19:43:45 Maria last message repeated 13 times

Feb 25 19:50:20 Maria last message repeated 13 times

It looks like we have some SCSI related activity here until the end:
