There is no separate release of the snapscan backend planned. It will 
be released together with all other backends in the next SANE backend 
release (which is not scheduled either). The current version of the 
backend is always available in SANE's CVS (it contains a few bugfixes 
for the 1670 but no major improvements).

"Basic", as far as I'm concerned. I currently don't have much time to 
work on the backend, plus I don't have a Perfection 1670 to test 
things.
