SuSE 9.0 uses SANE 1.0.10 - this is dangerous for your Epson 1260!!!
I strongly recommend to update to the latest 1.0.14. You can get 
updates from SuSE FTP (which will be SANE-1.0.13) or from 
http://packman.links2linux.de/

This should fix your problems.
