SANE provides backends (drivers) and frontends (applications). This
division allows third parties to produce their own frontends (Xsane,
quiteinsane) and facilitates network scanning.
Vuescan is more monolithic, Windows style, though I believe it does
use SANE backends for some scanners. Vuescan is aimed particularly at
film scanning so supports a wider range of film scanners than SANE.
