LD_PRELOAD ? Why not just set the LD_LIBRARY_PATH environment variable to 
look up /usr/local/lib first ? AFAIK this is the only way to properly 
force select programs to use a different library search path. Preloading 
just one library may not be enough - e.g. any dynamically loaded libraries 
would still be loaded from other directories. IIRC the default library 
path for the linux ld.so loader is /usr/lib:/lib ...
