[sane-devel] Error with Umax Astra 2200 under XSane 0.98

Yes, I've done some debug runs sending stderr to files but I don't have time to
upload and comment them right now. Probably tomorrow.
I think it's this that's happening when I try to preview:
[umax] sane_start
[umax] initialize_values
[umax] Using 12 bits for gamma input
[umax] Using 8 bits for output
[umax] check_values
[umax] ERROR: scanwidth or scanlength not given
[umax] ERROR: invalid scan-values
[xsane] preview_scan_done
[umax] sane_cancel
Although this also looks suspect to me:
[xsane] xsane_back_gtk_error: Failed to start scanner: Invalid argument.
I've been having trouble with GTK crashes (gtk+2-2.6.9). I've seen it in Gimp,
Mozilla with gtk2, and once in a while in XSane. This is on an old laptop
(Dell CPIa) with 2560K of video memory. It's barely enough for 24 bit color at
1024x768, and if something's trying to use backing store, well, there isn't
much. The crashes will take me right out of X entirely, leaving me in text
mode. Sometimes the application is still running, burning CPU trying to
connect to the display and I have to kill it, sometimes not. Maybe
xsane_back_gtk_error doesn't have anything to do with that, I don't know. More
likely the "back" is referring to backend, not backing store, probably. The
GTK crashes mostly happen when dialog boxes are open, which is why I'm
suspecting a backing store problem.
