Mea culpa. I found the reason for the GUI-crashes this morning. When I
see a file with a conf-extension, I cannot resist :-) My plustek_pp.conf
contained the lines:
|option warmup 10
|option lOffOnEnd 1
|option lampOff 30
The last line causes xsane & xscanimage to crash. The lamp switches off
30s after program start. Then the next mouse click kills the GUI. I
could reproduce this several times. After changing back the last line
to default value (-1) both programs run rock-solid.

I'll try.

I will, but not on my current setup. I've seen the required versions of
some libs to compile the current CVS source. I would have a lot of
trouble on Debian Sarge with dependencies and don't want to break other
applications.
But I'll find a partition to install a distri with more recent packages.
Best Regards
Daniel
