Can you send me a debug log? Run 
export SANE_DEBUG_SNAPSCAN=255 
then
scanimage 1>/dev/null 2>debug.log

It's supposed to be active in lineart mode only. Running 
scanimage --mode=Lineart --threshold=70
works fine here (although on another scanner model).
