The error message is not very useful without the function or better
yet, line of code. Maybe your binary isn't built with debug symbols?

You could try to disable this backend in dll.conf and look if it still
happens (e.g. with "xsane test"). If it doesn't happen it's most
probably a problem in the hpoj or hpaio backend and not in xsane.

Enabling debugging in xsane and the backend may also show the position
of the crash.
