i now installed 1.0.15 from freebsd ports (hacking the makefile to 1.0.15 and 
make NO_CHECKSUM=yes and then making a ln -s in the work dir). the scanner 
still doesn't work.

the scanner is connected and seen by my kernel:

ugen0: EPSON EPSON Scanner, rev 2.00/1.10, addr 2

i get I/O error, here is the log:

let me revert to the latest version to see if it fixes anything. i reinstalled 
1.0.17_3 from ports, but it looks it didn't overwrite the older backend i 
installed manually, because the older backend is still there:
