Hello,

I suppose you are using hp3900 series backend. This backend is still
unstable so it's not already included in SANE project. May be
sane-find-scanner finds the device but you haven't installed properly
the backend.

If you have installed SANE from sources be sure that you've patched
correctly SANE sources to include this backend. Be sure where have you
installed
SANE project and where are config files installed. SANE project uses by
default
/usr/local/etc/sane.d/ path. Debian official libsane package uses
/etc/sane.d.
So if you compile SANE from sources you should compile xsane and
xscanimage too.

If you install xsane or xscanimage packages in Debian using apt-get, you
will
be forced to install libsane package. In this case, these frontends will
look for
config files in /etc/sane.d and won't find hp3900 backend. If you've
installed
SANE and its frontends using apt-get, the last version of hp3900 backend
includes
a debian package which adds the backend to the official debian libsane
package.

You will find this package in:

https://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=150599

file: hp3900-sane_bin_0.4-1_i386.deb
