I had a similar problem with my Canon Scanlide 60.

sane-find-scanner would work, but xsane would not.

To get xsane to work, I had to go into the directory "/etc/hotplug/usb"
and edit the files:

'libsane.usermap'

#CanonLide60
 usbscanner 0x0003 0x04a9 0x221c 0x0000 0x0000 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x0
0000000

There should also be a script 'libusbscanner' there as well.
