I know about these scanners, and have been considering buying on of them
for some time. However, the rather high price made me not do so yet:
ca. 400 EUR for the AV600U (and it's only USB 1 which probably is
annoying when doing color scans) and ca. 600 EUR for the AV610. Also,
the AV600U seems to have been phased out and is rarely offered in
Germany, if at all.

Thanks for pointing that out. OTOH, Epson is AFAIK also a company that
supports SANE quite well. So, I may eventually go with the EPSON 4490
Office: Although its slow, at least - I presume - one doesn't have to
worry about scan quality. That's not so important for documents, but
for the occasional photo it could be an argument. It also supports
scanning medium format slides, which makes it even more interesting.
In the mean time I found out that the EPSON 4490 is supported by SANE:

However, I wonder: Would the ADF for the EPSON 4490 most likely work out
of the box with SANE?
