Ah...thanks a lot :)
I don't know where, but I read that distributions that use libusb to access 
the scanner don't need /dev permissions and should rather look at /proc 
permissions. Somehow that info was not working in my case or may be I got 
confused. I wrote a new udev rule and it works fine now.
