for a more detailled information you may do this:

export SANE_DEBUG_HP=255
and then
scanimage -L (gives a lot of output).

Only to be sure that there are no hardware reasons - if you have further  
USB-ports available at your box, you may plug the scanner there and look  
what's going on.
