[sane-devel] Unable to scan because of failures . . . failed re-install

This sounds as if you selected the copy mode of xsane.
If you want to use the copy mode you have to set up the printer:
preferences->setup->copy

If you don`t want to sent the scanned image to the printer use the
viewer or the save mode.
