it is a good idea to remove existing sane packages first, and install
new versions of sane where the original one was, just to make sure the
new version is getting used by existing apps.
however, there is no reason that all your libs must be in the same
dir. /etc/ld* and $LDPATH take care of that.
the problem here seems to be in sane itself.
