Thanks Allan,
I tried running scanimage and it turned out that sane-utils was not
installed. After installing sane-utils the scanner is now recognised and
works properly.

For the benefit of other newbies like me: To install sane-utils type the
following in a terminal window or search for sane-utils in Synaptic
    sudo apt-get install sane-utils

Maybe this could go into the documentation?
