I just downloaded Xerox’s  
Scanner_Driver_Dependency_Installer_10.5_Intel.dmg and took a look  
inside the installer package. It appears to include SANE backends from  
25 May 2008. It clearly does _not_ include the xerox_mfp backend. WTF?

Definitely try the installer packages from Mattias Ellert.
