OK, that doesn't look bad.
Your /etc/sane.d/dll.conf has been modified. Looks at it and make sure it
looks sane. Make sure the hp5590 line is not commented out.
Since you wanted to compile some sane related software on this box, I
suggest to install the sane-backends-devel package so you have the sane
headers in place.
Now, what does 'scanimage -L' show?
