[sane-devel] Debian, xsane and hp scanjet 4400c

I'm running under debian sid :
xsane          : version 0.996-1
libsane        : version 1.0.19-25
libsane-extras : version 1.0.19.14

I have connected the hp scanjet 4400c with USB. He is correctly detected :

and

device `hp_rts88xx:libusb:001:004' is a Hewlett-Packard ScanJet 4400C
flatbed scanner

But when I launch xsane under normal user and under root, I get :
open of device hp_rts88xx:libusb:001:004 failed: Error during device I/O

I found on the net that is a known problem. Is there a way to solve this
problem ?

Is the hpoj or the hplip package necessary ?
