Just confirmed with a windows laptop that the scanner works fine, so
it's either something in the Linux box (Ubuntu 8.04, hardy heron)
hardware (usb) or software (sane)... other usb devices (phone, camera,
etc) work ok.

Thank you in advance for any pointers, suggestions etc...
