I guess your printing system is CUPS.

If yes, see "Scaling to Fit" and the "Image Options" at
http://www.cups.org/documentation.php/doc-1.3/options.html

It reads in particular:
"If the specified scaling makes the image larger than the page,
  multiple pages will be printed to satisfy the request."
