How about the same thing, but also with usb debugging turned on:
SANE_DEBUG_SANEI_USB=255 SANE_DEBUG_GT68XX=255 scanimage --device-name
gt68xx:libusb:001:020 --resolution 300 > foo.pnm
You might also consider doing the smallest, lowest resolution scan
possible, and see if that improves matters.
