With the environment set as follows:

# env | grep SANE
DEBUG_SANE=255
SANE_DEBUG_SANEI_USB=255
SANE_DEBUG_DLL=255

the command:

scanimage 2> scanimage_may18_all255.txt > ofile

produces the following stderr output:
http://acm.poly.edu/~kurt/scanimage_may18_all255.txt
