Sorry- I've misunderstood your wording-
I did not intend that a button daemon would need scanimage for it's
operation. Merely that an end-user should be able to inspect the
capabilites of a backend, using tools provided with the backends. An
'add-on' daemon would likely use libsane directly, though scanimage
could still be helpful in writing the daemon's config file...
