Sounds like the same problem I had -
On the client machine, you have to tell it where to find the scanner. In
/etc/sane.d/net.conf
make sure you have an entry with either the IP address of the server or
the server name if you're using DNS
For example, I added the line
192.168.1.100
Worked like a champ.
