As stated in that mail 16-bit support in the epkowa backend is pretty
much untested because iscan doesn't need it.  For scanners that need a
non-free binary plugin it's tested even less.  Seeing that iscan doesn't
need the 16-bit support, a likely "fix" for your crashes is to simply
disable the 16-bit choice for the V500 :-(
