Only the magicolor backend (for KONICA MINOLTA magicolor 1690MF devices)
uses the snmp package to detect the scanner. The reason for the 5.6
requirement is that snmp broadcast was introduced in that version.
Even if the snmp library is not found, the magicolor backend will work,
but automatic network detection will not work and you'll have to enter
the IP address manually into the sane config file.
cups also uses its own snmp implementation, AFAIK.
Cheers,
Reinhold
