so it seems you have two problems:
- wrong access permissions for parallel port
- some timing issues when scanning
For the first problem, there should be countless suggestions around.
Maybe tweaking the right udev rule will do the trick. Or simply
assigning you user to group "lp"...
The second problem could be more tricky:
Try
export SANE_DEBUG_PLUSTEK_PP=10
then start
xsane
and show us the output.
