You probably not using latest version of SANE. Try latest version
from git repository:
  http://www.sane-project.org/cvs.html

xerox_mfp backend between 2010-09-30 -- 2011-03-08 had minor bug which
prevents it working with libusb. This includes current release 1.0.22
(released at 2011-02-13 which fall into bug date range).
