FYI:

This is used in Debian since Feb 2009 with no issues so far
and accordingly since openSUSE 11.4 (i.e. since Sep 2010)
we also use "configure ... --enable-pthread" and we also
had no issues so far, see

Perhaps nowadays pthread should be enabled by default for Linux?
