Please check on a Windows machine if the buttons have any functions for
the scan frontend.

If so, please test buttons with Sane with enabled debug outputs 'export
SANE_DEBUG_PIXMA=11' and 'scanimage -A'.
This scanimage command detects any former pressed button, if supported
by the scanner.

With my scanner (CS9000F) scanimage gives this response:
