Thanks for pointing that out:
I cloned the git repos yesterday:
git clone git://git.debian.org/sane/sane-backends.git
and did a default build.
Now I am able to scan:
$ scanimage -L
device `pixma:MX520_F934C5000000' is a CANON Canon PIXMA MX520
Series multi-function peripheral
device `pixma:04A91769_12999B' is a CANON Canon PIXMA MX520 Series
multi-function peripheral
$ scanimage>/tmp/img
$
It also works without the usb cable connected:
$ scanimage -L
device `pixma:MX520_F934C5000000' is a CANON Canon PIXMA MX520
Series multi-function peripheral
$ scanimage>/tmp/img
$

Another problem with scangearmp is that it only does simplex ADF scanning.

I see similar behaviour:

I haven't had the time to look further into this issue yet.
