[sane-devel] requesting help with setup of Kodak 5100 AiO scanner

Hello all,

I have a Kodak 5100 All-in-One, and I'm trying to use XSane to scan with
it. I'm trying to scan a simple black-and-white text document as a
bitmap, "line art" in other words, rather than sending the scan to OCR.
The default settings for "Gray" result in a terrible scan, and I haven't
been
able to find much improvement by adjusting the gamma, brightness, and
contrast. My only two mode choices are "Color" and "Gray"; "Lineart"
isn't an option for some reason.

Here's an example of a scanned document, using the default "Gray" settings:

I can get a usable "line art" image if I tweak the gamma, brightness, and
contrast as best I can, scan to GIMP, and then use GIMP's Threshold tool.
But that is far too much work for a single page, and the process wouldn't
work for a multi-page document that needs to be scanned to a single PDF
file. I haven't even tried scanning a color document yet, and I don't
think the results would be very usable if I did.

Would someone please point me in the right direction, or give me some
advice, so that I can change the scanner default settings to be more
useful?

- Rob
