[sane-devel] Attempting to scan with Canon PIXMA MG6200

Trying to get my xsane installation to work.
I installed xsane 0.999 on Fedora 28 via Fedora Software Center.The scanner is connected to the PC via USB cable.
This is the scanimage version and scanner:
    $ scanimage --version
    scanimage (sane-backends) 1.0.27; backend version 1.0.27
    $ scanimage -L
    device `pixma:04A91755' is a CANON Canon PIXMA MG6200 multi-function peripheral
I put a post card on the flat bed scanner.
>From xsane Viewer mode, I clicked the "Scan" button, and the scanner hummed for 6 seconds.
Then the "Viewer" window opened with a blank rectangle where I was expecting the postcard.
Did I miss a step?What is the proper way to scan with xsane?

This scanner/printer worked on Windows, although that was years ago.
