Alas, I cannot report success.
I was able to modify and build as you suggested.
I now get this:
$ sane-find-scanner
# sane-find-scanner will now attempt to detect your scanner. If the

sure that

found USB scanner (vendor=0x04a9, product=0x27f4) at libusb:012:002

and:
$ scanimage -L
device `pixma:04A927F4' is a CANON Canon i-SENSYS MF269 Series
multi-function peripheral
but:
$ scanimage -T
scanimage: open of device pixma:04A927F4 failed: Access to resource has
been denied
and:
$ sudo scanimage -T
scanimage: scanning image of size 634x877 pixels at 24 bits/pixel
scanimage: acquiring RGB frame, 8 bits/sample
scanimage: reading one scanline, 1902 bytes... FAIL Error: Error
during device I/O
$ sudo scanimage -V
scanimage (sane-backends) 1.0.27; backend version 1.0.27
Any other info that might help?
I've attached the patch.
