Yes, that's always been a valid workaround, but not a particularly
convenient one.  This is particularly true for other members of my
family, who aren't au fait with ImageMagick -- they prefer to use
user-friendly tools like gscan2pdf, which doesn't provide any mechanism
for changing the colour depth after the image has been scanned (because
it rightly assumes that the user should have selected the proper colour
depth before scanning).
