I wouldn't call it OT.

I'd pick one with an open-source SANE backend, i.e. HP, Epson or Fujitsu.

The HP machines I've owned have worked well. ATM I have an OfficeJet
6500. You can't put more than around 20 sheets in the ADF, but then
again I don't need to very often. It doesn't have duplex, which would be
useful and save some time. Otherwise, it's done its job well.
