Hi brian:
sane-escl merged with the sane project.
Now it is integrated with sane-backends.
The development is no longer done in sane-escl, but directly in 
sane-backends : 
https://gitlab.com/sane-project/backends/-/tree/master/backend/escl
The project is active!
