tried these ones, working fine:
scanimage --mode Color --resolution 150dpi > test.pnm
scanimage --mode Grayscale --resolution 150dpi > test.pnm
results:

btw, i now found and installed sane package as well, which comes with
xscanimage plugin for gimp (which i never heard of), which indeed
works fine - so it seems to be a bug (coredump related?) only related
to xsane? i really wonder why is that happening...
