Are you using Ubuntu's version of SANE or the latest from the SANE-Releases PPA?

If it's the former, switch to the latter:

In short:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:sane-project/sane-release
sudo apt-get update

Then run package updates (sudo apt-get upgrade, or use aptitude)
