windows I figured out part of the USB transfer protcol. I wrote a simple tool to retrieve the scanner's version string. It's at http://home.kabelfoon.nl/~bertrik/hp3300c/scanner.html#niash00033 It demonstrates basic capability to communicate with the scanner under Linux, but it's still very far from a sane backend.
