Yes, it is possible and commonly how it is done. Firstly, a developer would
probably want to know if the device uses a protocol that is already
supported.
Otherwise, writing a new backend is not very difficult but some knowledge
of the API is required. Usually, it is easier to take an existing backend
and modify it to suit, at least I found it so.

Out of interest, which ScanJet do you have?
