What about lsusb and (the last part of) dmesg? Does the USB device
disappear?

Does it work the same with the manufacturer's software (Windows etc)?
If not, perhaps comparing command sequences sent from SANE and from the
other sw could help. Otherwise (if the original sw behaves the same),
it could be a firmware problem.

A command log from SANE could help, though.
