IMHO a log entry:

  %(listname)s: Invalid date in message %(messageid)s %(wrongdate)s was replaced by %(replacementdate)s.

or something like this would be reasonable to track down such issues
afterwards.  I think we discussed some options for a replacement date
in the past.
