The default compression of *binary* packages has changed. The default
compression of original sources has not changed and remains the same as
upstream has released the tarball.

In how far is this related to the compression of original sources?

In how far is this effecting alioth? You are storing the uncompressed
Git repository there, right?

Just assume that I know the advantages of better compression in general.
If you really care about this why not convincing upstream to use xz or
bz2 compression? I guess the sources are way more downloaded from there
than from Debian mirror where it is rather the exception than the rule.
Kind regards
