I asked Igor about it when sponsoring the package. His reply was:

"I replaced it with Berkeley DB a long time ago. I don't remember my exact
reasons. I probably wasn't thinking of just Debian or even just Linux.
I think Berkeley DB is somewhat more ubiquitous and, besides, claims to have
portable binary data files."

I hope he won't mind me citing this response here.
